What's a stoat? Well we've been wondering the same thing for a while now. And yesterday we finally saw one. Its like a cross between a weasel and a possum. They are one of the main predators of Kiwi birds here. They are kind of cuddly looking, and its nice to know that this the number one predator here. Pat and I went for a hike through a Kauri forest called Waipoua Forest. It's really more of a jungle. There are tons of crazy loud and slightly scary birds, and lots of plants. We went for a hike at night, which was especially scary, but that is when the Kiwi birds are out. We didn't see any Kiwi, but we did see glow worms, the stoats, and a 4ft eel!. Yikes, he was scary. Pat made us a delicious dinner, we splurged and got some cheese ( I know, crazy right?). But I think my stomach is no longer used to cheese, because I feel a little ill today. But Pat is taking good care of me. Right now we are back at Uretiti camp ground near Whangarei for the Rally race that is going to be here in a couple of days. That should be fun. We'll be sure to let you know how it goes! The pic below is of a Kauri tree. This one is called Lord of the Forest. Kauri tress are among the largest in the world. This one is around 2000 years old.

Hello there! Pat and I have been traveling around the far north of NZ. We have been to some beautiful beaches, and seen lots of pretty country side. Yesterday we went on a long hike to Cape Reinga. It was very steep, very muddy and slippery, with thorn bushes on either side. Those who know me, know that I'm a little clumsy, and of course I fell face first into a thorn bush and then slipped down the muddy hill on my butt. I emerged covered in thorns on my front and mud on my back. But that didn't keep us from climbing to our destination. We got there, some how pat slipped and slidded around too, but didn't get any mud on his clothes, hmmm. But it was beautiful the whole way. Everytime we looked around us there was another beautiful site to behold. Cape Reinga has a light house there and its where the Pacific ocean meets the Tasman sea. You can actaully see where they meet. The picture is below. The waves on the left are the Tasman sea, and the ones on the right are the Pacific. The waves are moving towards each other instead of the same direction. It's pretty cool. As for us, we are getting the hang of van life pretty well. Pat's reading all of Lord of the Rings, and I'm reading Mansfield park. We eat good food everynight (thanks to pat) and we see the sunrise every morning, and the sunset every night. It's pretty sweet. We are completly out of the loop on what is going on in the world. I have heard no news since we left. Also both of our watches died about 2 weeks ago, and the clock in Delilah doesn't work, so we only know what time it is when we get on the computer, and the clock is still set for Utah, so....yeah. If anything important does happen, let us know...you are our only connection to the outside world. Until next time...
~Skeeter Hi everyone! we are still here on the KariKari peninsula. We are having a hard time deciding if we want to leave here or not in a few days. Its really nice! We need some ideas for books to read, we have been reading a ton here. So far Pat and I both have read Getting Stoned with Savages, Pirate Latitutes, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Virgin Blue, Deception Point, and most of the complete short stories of Mark Twain. We are basically all out of books to read until we find another used bookstore. So, if you have any good suggestions, let us know! I'm going to post some new pics of us on the photo page. These are of us in Maitai bay, on some hikes and trying to go mussel fishing! Hope everyone is well!

Hi there! I'm Skeeter. I grew up moving a lot and that makes me a bit restless for travel and exploration. I started this blog with my husband Pat when we decided to backpack New Zealand for a year. We are always looking for the next adventure and are loving life. We're just your average couple with two sassy dogs and a love for travel. We're sharing our travels and the tips we pick up along the way. LIZHello! I'm Liz. Blogging is very new to me, but I'm so excited to finally write as much as I talk! Archives
