Pat and I are setteling in nicely in Whitianga. My new job is going great, and we are really enjoying ourselves here. My job is pretty easy, pays well, and everyone there is really nice. The weather is a little spotty though. I've posted a couple of new pics, one of a beautiful day on the beach, and another of our backyard flooded by two days of rain. We haven't been venturing much out of Whitianga lately. We are just content to hang out at the house, look at the ocean, and read some books. I've been reading Islands in the Stream by Hemmingway, and Pat is reading Dexter. Both of us have been cooking up a storm, grilled fish, homemade chili sauce, tortillas, sopapillas, and scones, yum! We are anxious to see the rest of New Zealand, but we are so happy here, that we haven't really been planning much. We are definatly going to stay here throught the winter and perhaps into the spring. We have also been following the world cup a lot, its on tv all the time here. We have also decided that Rugby is our favorite sport. We won't be able to feel the same about football again. They are also really into Netball here. Netball is a lot like basketball, but is only played by women, and it has some different rules. I can't say I feel the same about Netball though as I do about Rugby. Thanks to everyone who is still following us on our journey. It is so nice to get messages from home, and to hear how everyone is doing. We hope to some of you have an opportunity to come and visit us while we are here.

So Pat and I are in the process of setting up a bank account, so that I can get paid, and so that we can pay our rent in a form other than cash every two weeks. But, unlike in the US, you can't just walk into a bank and give them all your money in exchange for a little pastic card. We tried that, but they said we needed to make an appointment and come back. We then had to reschedule because I got called into work. So today is round two. Maybe if we are lucky we can convice them to keep all of our money for us. Pat and I are also getting into cooking lately. A month of cooking in the van has made us realize how much we love cooking in the kitchen. Last night Pat grilled up some fish, and some home made sweet potato fries, and I made rasberry white chocolate scones. The scones turned out better than I thought they would, and Pat's fish was the best in the world, he will gladly tell you, as he has me, that the fish was delicious, and no one has ever had fish that good. This is funny because up until last night Pat didn't really like to eat fish, but now he loves it, and proudly reminds me how delicious dinner was last night. Tonight I am going to make some homemade tortillas, and I am currenty trying to talk Pat into making some more fish, although if it is as good or better than last night, I will never hear the end of how great Pat is at grilling fish. But that may be a sacrifice I am willing to make. The job is going very well. It is pretty easy and straight forward, and everyone has been really nice. I'm getting better at making fancy coffee drinks, and I serve champagne to people lounging in hot tubs. Nothing to difficult with that I guess. Well we better head off to the bank, I'd hate to be late and have them tell us that they still do not want our money.
Cheers~ Skeeter So this morning I was sappossed to be starting at Cafe Nina as a barista. I got a phone call though an hour befor I had to be there. It was the owner saying that the girl I was replacing's new job fell through, so she would no longer be leaving, and they would no longer need me to start. Bummer! But then just a few hours later I had another interview scheduled at a place called The Lost Spring (http://www.thelostspring.co.nz/). And happily I can report that I have a job that I start at tomorrow. It will be good to have something part time to replenish our travel fund a bit, and keep Pat from having to get a job at the mussell plant, unless he gets bored. (although we have been enjoying all the mussell jokes!) But he's been keeping himself pretty busy around the house chopping fire wood, fixing our mail box, and making plans to fixup Delilah. He's also been making us all sorts of delicious food everynight on our grill. We love the beach house! Whitianga is a wonderful town, and every person we've met is really nice. It's amazing how many strangers we've met who have helped us with everything from finding an apartment to finding a job and everything in between. It's one of those towns where everyone knows everyone else. We've only been here about a week, and people are already saying hello to us in the street. The local paper has a police blotter section, last week there were no arrests, and this week this is what it said " Two cars have been impounded in seperate incidents where the drivers thought that doing a skid was clever whilst intoxicated." So, it's pretty safe here. It reminds us of reading the police blotter in West Yellowstone.
Yesterday we went for a walk on the beach, and there was a thresher shark that had washed up on the beach. Yikes! Good news though, Thresher Sharks are not aggressive towards people. The beaches here are amazing! Although beaches in the U.S. beautiful, the ones here are also prestine. They are always free of liter, and there are covered in beautiful sea shells, sand dollers, and usually there are no other people for as far as you can see. I've never seen so many unbroken, beautiful seashells on every beach. We had fun yesterday celebrating Pat's birthday, and it's been beautiful here. NZ is pretty sweet! Thanks everyone for following us! ~Skeeter PS Vashti, we got your emails. I'm not sure if ours to you are making it to you or not. If they aren't, let us know, and we will try again. |

We're sharing our travels and the tips we pick up along the way. LIZHello! I'm Liz. Blogging is very new to me, but I'm so excited to finally write as much as I talk! Archives
