When we were researching New Zealand, one thing we always read about the weather was that it is changable. It is so true! Pat and I are starting to figure out what the cause is though. On days when we are planning on staying in and read our books or when I have to work, it's beautiful, without a cloud in site. When I have a day off, and we plan on going for a hike or a run along the beach, it turns to doom and gloom, and rains cats and dogs. So, to trick the weather, Pat and I say the opposite of what we are going to do. If we want to ride the ferry from town to a neighboring beach to go for a hike and a picnic, we'll say " I think we should just stay in, and relax for the day". We did, and it was beautiful. I then made the mistake of saying ' It's beautiful, we should get our stuff ready, and go to the ferry today." Within 15 min, the whole town of Whitianga was covered in dark rain clouds, with no blue sky on the horizon. Sigh! So now, I'm pretending that I just wanna stay home today, with hopes that the clouds will dissapear. With my luck they wont dissapear until tomorrow when I have to work. There is definatly a consiracy at work here. We might have to just jump on the ferry and go for a hike, rain or shine, if we ever want to go. As for work, the new position is going well. The second day on the job I was bombarded with staff compaints and requests that hadn't been addressed in the past, and I also got a new title added to my role, Opporations Coordinator. It sounds important, but I'm mostly just a liazon between departments. People keep asking Pat if he's found a job yet, and we then explain that we are mostly just on holiday and that I'm only working because I get antsy when I don't have a job, and that I'm a freak who has to work hard at relaxing. They then tell Pat that he's very clever for getting me to work so he can stay home. He then feels like a bum for a minute, but then remembers how happy he is every morning, as oppossed to dreading a long work day. I must say that I am very happy too. I like my job, I love New Zealand, and It's so nice to have Pat home. So, we are off on Operation Sun Seeker. We'll let you know how it goes!

Hello, Pat & Skeeter here. It has been an interesting week here. I got promoted to HR manager at The Lost Spring. I started this week, and it has been interesting and challenging so far, and I like it. It has been nice to have Delilah back for driving into town, we missed her. Pat and I have been taking advantage of having a kitchen to cook in. I made ANZAC biscuits (a traditional NZ cookie), and Pat has been making homemade salsa, bread, tortillas, and lots of good stuff. I found out that Absinthe is legal here, and that you can buy it at the liquor store. So I went and got some, and we tried it last night. I'm not sure how it got the negative history about it because it wasn't crazy at all. It is green, tastes like licorice and mint, and has a similar effect of regular alcohol. The back of the bottle listed some famous people who liked to drink it like Picasso and Hemmingway. I kept waiting for my artistic genius to emerge, but I guess I'm going to have to continue with drawing stick figures. It is one of those things that we can say we've done, but won't have the need to do again; So much for chasing the green fairy. Pat and I are starting to plan a couple of day trips and hikes, which will be nice. We have been loving every day here in Whitianga, but it will be fun to go out and explore some new places. July is typically the coldest month here, and it's almost over! We are so excited for some good hot days. I hope to have some good pictures posted of our new explorations!
Love, Skeeter & Pat Hello from New Zealand! Things are great here as usual. We needed to get a new WOF (warrenty of fitness ) for Delilah. You have to get one every 6 months for your car. We figured that since she passed 6 months ago, and she is running fine that she would pass again. We figured wrong. The previous owners had covered up a bit of rust in a few spots, and she failed her WOF test for that, and few other miner things. So we had to take her in to a "Panelbeater" to get the body work done. $500 dollars later she is now road worthy again. We also found out that she has a kill switch, which is odd but it will be handy when we are parked out in the middle of no where. Now we can just flip the kill switch when we leave her somewhere, and no one will be able to take off with her. The days are starting to get longer and warmer, and winter is starting to fade here. Although the winter here is so mild that we can hardly complain about the weather. In fact the last couple of days we've been able to lay out on the deck in the sun : ), not too shaby for the middle of winter. It is absolutely beautiful here. Kiwi's realy take pride in the environment. Recenlty there was an article in the paper about how the city of Whitianga needs to take better care of the beach here, and how it isn't up to the standard of a tourist destination. I was shocked, beacause the beach is stunning. We've never seen any garbage on the beach. The only thing you see is sand, seashells and some drift wood washed up from the ocean. But it just goes to show you how serious they are here about keeping the land prestine. |
