Last year on my birthday is when I started the blog about our journey to New Zealand. In that blog I had 5 things that I wanted to accomplish or at least start on during the next year. Those were:
1) Travel to New Zealand with Pat 2) I want to learn a new language 3) I want to continue on our fitness track 4) I want to find a career that I am passionate about 5) I want to find a personal hobby that I enjoy And I would have to say that although I haven't by any means accomplished all that I had wished for, I'm on my way. It has been a wonderful year, and I can say that because of that, turning a year older isn't that bad. Pat and I did make it to New Zeland, and when I had said I wanted to learn a new language I had Spanish, or Italian in mind. But the english they speak here is like a whole new language. Pat says I'm starting to sound a little funny : ). And because we have a beach to walk down, I can say that I am in better shape than I was when I was turning 25. Although I haven't found a career that I'm passionate about, I do know more about what I want out of my career, and I'm getting good experience that will help me get the job that I want someday. I still haven't found what I would call a hobby that I enjoy, but I have had time to do more reading, more time in the sun, and more time with Pat which all make me very happy. I feel like it would be selfish to wish for more than I already have because I feel so blessed to be with Pat doing what we've always wanted to do. But since it is my birthday, I guess a birthday wish is in order. In the next year I'd like to: 1) Continue traveling the world with Pat 2) Learn a new language 3) Continue on our fitness track 4) Find a career that I'm passionate about 5) find a personal hobby that I enjoy So, I guess these are more my hopes for life, things that I want to be able to continue doing forever. Luckily I have Pat along for the ride with me, and I know no matter what we're doing, I'll be happy. I also want to take this birthday post to thank all of our family and friends for all of your support and love. Without you, life wouldn't be the same. ~Skeeter

You may think based on everything Skeeter has blogged so far that New Zealand is nothing but sunshine, rainbows and smiley faces. But there is a darker side of New Zealand, and I'm here to tell you about it. In no particular order I give you the worst of New Zealand:
-90 km/hr winds -Broken vans -Showering in an outdoor cold shower on a cold and rainy day. -Showering in an outdoor cold shower on a cold and rainy and windy day and then your towel and clothes blowing away and then chasing said towel and clothes through a crowded campground wearing nothing but a grin -Wet, moldy, cold vans. -Roundabouts -Obscure traffic laws -5 speed manual transmissions on the column -Being laughed at when asking for directions -Sand mites -Houses without insulation -Sand in all of your clothes, shoes, hair and ..ugh, crevices -No switchbacks on trails..seriously? -Not understanding a single word someone is telling you even when it sounds vaguely like english -Rain for 6 days in a row -90% humidity 99% of the time -Possibly the most confusing sport ever created, Cricket -Currency that appears to be based on a board game -The elusive kiwi bird -Spiders the size of a Skeeter fist -Instant coffee -Deciphering the weather code. ie when you are told theres going to be "a bit of weather" it means it will rain for about a day, "a little bit of rain" means it will rain for 3-4 days, "a good bit of rain" means it will rain for the next week with gale force winds, and if someone is so bold as to tell you "theres a storm coming" you would be a fool not to head for higher ground and prepare for the skies to part and let loose all manner of meteorological devastation. Miss you all, Pat The weather here has been wet, wet, wet. It has been raining for about 3 days straight, but tonight as I was getting off work the sky turned the most beautiful shade of orange. When I got home, Pat asked if I had seen the sky, and I replied yes, and then he said " that was the most amazing rainbow I have ever seen!", "what rainbow?" I asked. Pat then went on to explain that as the rain stopped, a rainbow was over the ocean, that was so large that we had to turn from side to side to see the whole thing, and that it was amazing and spectacular. I was of course bummed that I missed it, and even more bummed that Pat didn't take a picture, he said that there was no way for him to get it all in one shot. I think he just wanted to keep the magical moment to himself. Things are going well with my job, I'm shaking things up, and making some changes, and people are really taking to them nicely. It ishard to believe that we have been gone for 3 months already. Just the other day I found out that one of the biggest New Year's eve parties in New Zealand is just a few yards from our house. it's called Coromandel Gold, and you can see what it's all about here http://coromandelgold.co.nz/page/5-Home . It looks like heeps of fun. I was talking to Pat about it to decide if we wanted to stay here until then to go. And when we started to think about it, and realized that New Years is 5 months away, we realized that there is no way to tell what we are going to want to do by then, or where we are going to want to be. But we are going to keep our options open, and enjoy every minute of it. If you have any good ideas for New Year's let us know. i was thinking Sydney might be fun too. It will be a weird experience having christmas and new years parties on the beach in shorts...I certainly wont be complaining no matter where we are.

We're sharing our travels and the tips we pick up along the way. LIZHello! I'm Liz. Blogging is very new to me, but I'm so excited to finally write as much as I talk! Archives
